18.cifr/2012.aad.higgs-atlasA search for the Standard Model Higgs boson in proton-proton collisions with the ATLAS detector at the LHC is presented. The datasets used correspond to integrated luminosities of approximately 4.8 fb-1 collected at sqrt(s)=7 TeV in 2011 and 5.8 fb-1 at sqrt(s)=8 TeV in 2012. Strong evidence for a new particle is observed in the Higgs boson search at a mass near 126 GeV with a significance of 5.9 sigma.

Authors flagged precise Higgs coupling measurements to test SM predictions, measurement of the Higgs self-coupling, and searches for additional Higgs bosons in beyond-SM theories. Determining spin-parity (J^P=0+) and measuring rare decay channels (H->mu+mu-, H->Z-gamma) were immediate follow-up goals identified in the paper.
