18.cifr/2010.macal.abm-tutorialThis paper provides a tutorial on agent-based modelling and simulation (ABMS). We describe what ABM is, how to develop an ABM, and how to conduct a study using ABM. We present a worked epidemic spread example using the SIR model implemented as an ABM on a spatial grid, illustrating agent states, behaviours, interactions, and emergent population-level dynamics.

Authors suggest extending to multi-level ABM where agents contain sub-agent populations. Integration with statistical calibration (e.g., ABC) and scaling to parallel HPC environments remain open challenges. Formal verification of emergent behaviour is also flagged.
