18.cifr/1988.ferrenberg.histogram-reweightingA new Monte Carlo technique is presented which allows the accurate calculation of thermodynamic properties of statistical-mechanical systems over a range of temperatures from a single Monte Carlo run. The method uses the histogram of the energy distribution to extrapolate thermodynamic properties to temperatures other than the one at which the simulation was performed. Results for the two-dimensional Ising model demonstrate that the technique provides accurate thermodynamic quantities near the critical temperature.

The authors extended this to the multiple-histogram (WHAM) method combining data from several temperatures. Remaining limitations include the finite reweighting range set by histogram overlap and difficulty with multicomponent order parameters. Wang-Landau flat-histogram sampling and multicanonical methods address some of these gaps.
