18.cifr/1987.swendsen.sw-cluster-mcA new approach to Monte Carlo simulations is presented which eliminates critical slowing down for a class of models. The method uses a nonlocal updating scheme based on the Fortuin-Kasteleyn representation of the Potts model. By flipping clusters of spins simultaneously the dynamic critical exponent z is reduced from approximately 2 to approximately 0, demonstrating nonuniversal critical dynamics.

Extensions to continuous-spin models (XY, Heisenberg), systems with quenched disorder, and quantum Monte Carlo via world-line cluster updates are natural next steps. Rigorous bounds on the dynamic exponent z for the SW algorithm remain open.
