18.cifr/2009.flourentzou.vsc-hvdcThis paper presents an overview of voltage source converter (VSC) based high-voltage direct current (HVDC) power transmission systems. The paper reviews the VSC converter topologies used in HVDC applications, the pulse width modulation (PWM) techniques applied, and the control methods employed. The advantages and disadvantages of VSC-HVDC over classical line-commutated converter (LCC) HVDC are discussed. The paper also covers installed VSC-HVDC projects worldwide and future prospects for the technology.

The authors flag modular multilevel converters (MMC) as a promising evolution not covered in this review. Extension to multi-terminal DC grids with droop control and detailed loss modeling for higher switching frequencies are identified as open areas requiring further study.
