18.cifr/2011.zimmerman.matpower-powerflowThis paper presents MATPOWER, a package of MATLAB M-files for solving power flow and optimal power flow problems. It is intended as a simulation tool for researchers and educators that is easy to use and modify. MATPOWER is designed to give the best performance possible while keeping the code simple to understand and modify. The paper describes the network modeling, formulations, and algorithms used in MATPOWER and presents results from a number of test cases illustrating its capabilities.

The authors flag extensions to three-phase unbalanced distribution systems and additional solver interfaces as future directions. Security-constrained unit commitment and co-simulation with dynamic simulation packages are natural next steps enabled but not implemented by the callback architecture. Integration with real-time market simulation platforms is also implied.
