A method for automatic tuning of simple regulators is presented. The method is based on relay feedback to identify the ultimate gain and ultimate period of the process, followed by analytical computation of PID parameters to satisfy specifications on phase and amplitude margins.

Problem solved

Manual PID tuning requires expert knowledge and classical Ziegler-Nichols open-loop tests are noise-sensitive and give no margin guarantees. This paper automated identification of the critical frequency via relay feedback and synthesized controllers to explicit stability margin specs.

Novelty

Åström and Hägglund introduced relay (on-off) feedback to automatically identify the critical point of a process without open-loop step tests. The method computes PID parameters analytically to meet explicit phase and amplitude margin specifications rather than fixed Ziegler-Nichols ratios, enabling safety-aware automated tuning.
