18.cifr/2003.lasseter.microgridThis paper introduces the Microgrid concept: a cluster of loads and microsources operating as a single controllable system that provides both power and heat to its local area. The Microgrid can operate either connected to the grid or in island mode. Control is based on local droop characteristics so no communication between sources is needed.

Protection coordination in islanded mode remains an open challenge because fault current levels drop dramatically when utility support is lost. Dynamic load sharing among heterogeneous microsources with different response times needs further study. Extension to multi-microgrid architectures and standardized interconnection requirements are flagged as necessary next steps.
