18.cifr/1966.yee.fdtd-maxwellA method is presented for the numerical solution of initial boundary value problems associated with Maxwell's equations in isotropic media. The method is based on finite-difference approximations to the partial derivatives in Maxwell's equations and applies to both the electric and magnetic field components simultaneously using a staggered grid.

Absorbing boundary conditions (Mur, PML) to prevent domain-edge reflections were an open problem flagged implicitly by Yee's PEC-boundary treatment. Higher-order differencing and nonlinear or anisotropic media extensions are the most obvious next steps implied by the isotropic linear restriction.
