Integration of WAMPAC with distributed energy resources and microgrids remains an open challenge since PMU methods assume synchronous generator dynamics. Cyber-security of wide-area communication and resilience to data loss or latency are unresolved. Extension to distribution-level micro-PMUs and standardized interoperability protocols are needed next steps.
