18.cifr/2004.plett.ekf-battery-socThis paper presents an extended Kalman filter (EKF) approach for estimating the state of charge (SOC) of lithium polymer battery packs used in hybrid electric vehicles. An equivalent circuit model including a hysteresis element is used as the state-space model. The EKF provides optimal recursive estimates and formal uncertainty bounds.

Authors suggest dual or joint EKF to simultaneously estimate parameters and state, enabling adaptation to aging. Unscented Kalman filter is flagged as a way to reduce linearization error for highly nonlinear OCV curves. Wider temperature range validation is also needed.
